A Short Review of Katherine Yurica's Rebuttal of Stanley Kurtz' Attack

By Lee Laurais

Katherine Yurica's rebuttal of Stanley Kurtz' caricature of her views gives me a much needed boost.

These days, when I hear someone describe him or herself as a Christian, I'm apt to duck behind the piano as I expect that I'm in the presence of a war-mongering, gay-bashing, profiteering, violence-prone, right wing yahoo who couldn't care less about the poor, the outcast and the marginalized and who would happily trade his or her birthright of freedom and decency for the mess of pottage that our decadent, irresponsible, national leadership has gotten us into. I wish you luck in your efforts to reclaim the faith from the mass apostasy that "walks with me and talks with me" all the way to my blue and very private heaven where the devil is given free rein to take the hindmost.

Like Stanley Kurtz, I'm of Jewish background; though, in the slightly modified words of Sam Cooke, "Don't know much about history, don't know much theology..." but I do know "one and one is two...," and I'm hoping that my brethren among the Jewish neo-cons might one day see the light and "get back to where we once belonged," viz. in the company of those who cotton in the commandments of the Lord God of Israel something more inclusive and noble than the stern ministrations of some reactionary Republican father-figure kick-ass.

Nations, like individuals, reap what they sow, and I'm afraid it will go hard with us. You don't have to be a Bible-thumping, Sunday go to meeting Christian to take to heart Jesus' message in Matthew 23. And the Golden Rule, as you likely know, is Jesus re-statement of Rabbi Hillel's great summation of Jewish scripture, meaning we're all of a piece.

I no longer look to religion or to religious communities to practice what they preach, but the Yurica Report's columns do make me feel that not all is spiritually lost in these days of derogation of the faith.

I just want to let the Yurica Report know that I'm glad you're out there plugging, and I hope you'll keep at it despite the crap you may sometimes find yourself taking from the pestilent pundits of pusillanimity.

Directory on the Rise of Christian Dominionism

Stanley Kurtz Attacks Yurica:
Dominionist Domination
The Left runs with a wild theory.
by Stanley Kurtz
You want political paranoia? You want guilt by
association? You want flat-out looniness? Well,
Joe McCarthy’s got nothing on the good liberal
folks who are warning us about a takeover by
“Dominionist” Christians. What you've just read
is a composite I've created (often word for word)
by drawing on a couple of web-sites I'll link you
to in a moment.

Stanley Kurtz Attacks Yurica’s,
“The Despoiling of America”:
A Response

By Katherine Yurica
May 23, 2005

Stanley Kurtz did his best. In an article titled, “Dominionist
Domination,” published May 2, 2005 by National Review Online,
he tried to attack and crumble the reasoning in my essay,
“The Despoiling of America.” He didn’t have much to work with,
so as a last resort he made up things. He invented an essay
that does not exist and said, “See! Look at what she wrote!”
Then he gave a list of the imaginary faults in his newly rewritten
essay and attributed them to me!
