Mr. Bushs Oil Security Blanket
2007 State of the Union Address:
One of the stranger and so far unexplained items
in President Bushs energy program is his proposal
to double the capacity of the Strategic Petroleum
Reserve, to 1.5 billion barrels, over the next 20 years.
The proposal carries a $65 billion price tag one of
several reasons Congress should question Energy Secretary
Samuel Bodman closely when he comes looking for the money.
How Bush Pushed Gasoline
Prices Sky HighReported by Katherine Yurica
When George Bush vowed he would fill the
nations Strategic Petroleum Reserves to capacity,
the administration began purchasing oil. Lots of oil.
Forty million barrels of oil. These purchases drove
the price of crude oil up and up--to a twelve year high.

It's a Baker Botts World
by ROBERT BRYCE
[from the October 11, 2004 issue of The Nation]The induction of George W. Bush into the Texas
crony network can be traced to a precise date:
June 6, 1962. On that date, the gregarious 15-year-
old went to work in the mailroom of Houston's oldest
and most prestigious law firm, Baker Botts.
Cheney Task Force Eyed on Iraq Oil
By H. Josef Hebert
Friday 18 July 2003WASHINGTON -- Vice President Dick Cheney's
energy task force appeared to have some interest in
early 2001 in Iraq's oil industry, including which foreign
companies were pursuing business there, according to
documents released Friday by a private watchdog group.

Cheney Made A False Statement to Congress
By JOHN W. DEAN
Friday, Aug. 29, 2003This month, the General Accounting Office (GAO) -
the investigative and auditing arm of Congress -
issued a report that contains some startling revelations.
Though they are couched in very polite language, they
are bombshells nonetheless.
"The GOP Energy Bill: An Infinite
Mirage and a Boundless Facade"
U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd
Friday 07 November 2003Senator Byrd delivered
the following remarks in anticipation of the upcoming
debate on the energy bill:
NASA Ames Center looks at problem
of drilling on Mars: HalliburtonKristen Nelson
If there is life on Mars, it would probably be
microorganisms in water deep below the surface
of the planet. Dr. Geoffrey Briggs, director, Center
for Mars Exploration at the NASA Ames Center,
told Meet Alaska that NASA is looking at ways to
drill on Mars to look for water and the life it might
contain. Briggs said NASA has been working with
Halliburton, Shell, Baker-Hughes and the Los Alamos
National Laboratory to identify drilling technologies
that might work on Mars.
A Vision of Power
By PAUL KRUGMAN
There's a deep mystery surrounding Dick Cheney's
energy task force, but it's not about what happened
back in 2001. Clearly, energy industry executives
dictated the content of a report that served their interests.
At Least, Strengthen the Grid
We were happy when Republican leaders abandoned
an awful, pork-laden energy bill before the holiday
recess. The bill did, however, contain a few useful
provisions, one of which deserves to be resurrected
the moment Congress returns to work. It would require
the federal government and the utility industry to write
mandatory rules for the operation of the power grid.
The goal is to make America's electrical transmission
system more reliable and fix some of the things that may
have contributed to the August blackout.
Power Outage Traced to Dim Bulb in
White HouseThe Tale of the Brits Who Swiped 800 Jobs from
New York, Carted off $90 Million, then Tonight,
Turned Off Our LightsBy Greg Palast
I can tell you all about the ne're-do-wells that put out our
lights tonight. I came up against these characters -- the
Niagara Mohawk Power Company -- some years back.
You see, before I was a journalist, I worked for a living,
as an investigator of corporate racketeers. In the 1980s,
"NiMo" built a nuclear plant, Nine Mile Point, a brutally
costly piece of hot junk for which NiMo and its partner
companies charged billions to New York State's
electricity ratepayers.
Company With Ties To VP Cheney's Energy
Task Force Faces Criminal Indictment For
Gaming Calif. Electricity Marketby Jason Leopold
Three years ago, while California's energy crisis was
spiraling out of control, Vice President Dick Cheney
secretly met with half-dozen corporate executives of
the country's largest energy companies to hammer out
a national energy policy for President George W. Bush.
Supreme Court to Rescue Cheney
Task force majeure
Amanda Griscom - grist magazineOn Monday, the Supreme Court offered Vice President
Dick Cheney a possible escape hatch from the great
energy task force imbroglio. The high court agreed to
hear an appeal from Cheney, who for more than a year
has been defying a federal judge's order to pony up
documents about his infamous 2001 task force. Those
behind the lawsuit against the veep are certain the
documents will reveal that the White House was
canoodling with industrial interests behind closed
doors as it worked to establish national energy policy.
