Soldier Who Spoke Out About Prisoner Abuse Disciplined
POSTED: 7:44 a.m. EDT May 26, 2004
BERLIN -- The Army sergeant who spilled the beans about goings on at Abu Ghraib prison is paying a price.
Sgt. Samuel Provance told The Associated Press he has been disciplined by the military -- and stripped of his security clearance.
Provance said stories in the media suggesting the prison abuse was the result of individual soldiers just weren't true. So he gave interviews about prison interrogators' methods for dealing with prisoners -- after being told by a company commander not to talk about what he had seen.
Provance said he's become "like a villain" to fellow soldiers, who aren't talking to him anymore. But he said he would do it all over again.
Provance is with a military intelligence battalion and was in charge of Abu Ghraib's computer network for five months.
