An Open Letter to God on Health Care:

(With carbons to Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Sara Palin, and the rest of the Republican Party)

Dear God,

I have never written a letter to you before but I wanted to. I kept thinking that you probably get zillions of them every day and anything from me might increase your load—since you carry responsibility for the whole world. But now I need to let you know what’s happening on earth in order to find out if it’s what’s happening in heaven since they are both supposed to be the same (Matthew 6:10).  One pastor down here says universal health care is “of the devil and all Christians should fight it!” because “it’s like communism!”

So I want to know if you have an anti-universal-health-care campaign going on in heaven too? And if you do—why did Jesus spend so much time going around healing the sick? (I mean look up Matt. 4:23, 24; 8:7, 8:16; and 9:35 where Jesus healed “every sickness and every disease” of everyone and see Matt: 10:1; 10:8; 12:13; 12:22; 14:14; 15:30; 19:2; 21:14; and Mark 1:34; 3:10, 6:13; and Luke 4:40; 5:15; 5:17; 9:6; 9:11; 9:42; and Acts 5:16; 8:7; 28:9, etc.) And if there is an anti-universal health care campaign going on in heaven doesn’t it go against what Jesus did and taught? Remember, “A house divided against itself, cannot stand!” (Matt. 12:25-26; Mark 3:24-26; Luke 11:17-18)

My friend Tommy, who is my age, got bone cancer and his parents had to sell their house in order to pay for Tommy’s treatments. (They used to live three houses down from us—the one with the green shutters!)

Our pastor said its up to Tommy’s neighbors to pitch in and help—but that’s me! My parents said they don’t have enough money. I don’t either. But Tommy’s sister, Meg, told me that if everyone in the whole country contributed then it might be enough. That’s a lot of money! But how can I tell everyone in the whole country to send their money to Tommy’s parents? I don’t have everyone’s address! But you do!

There’s something else that bothers me: I read in the Bible about a priest who saw a wounded man on the roadside and didn’t do anything to help him (see Luke 10:31; but read from verse 30 through 37). The fact is Jesus didn’t like that behavior! So why wouldn’t that same Jesus want universal health care today and why wouldn’t he be just as angry with those who are doing nothing to support it and furious with those who are opposing it?

Tommy’s sister keeps asking, “What would Jesus do?” So that’s why I’m asking.

Our pastor says it’s my responsibility to help and not the governments! So I sent Tommy a get-well card with all my savings in it--$15 dollars. I would like to know your opinion on what Jesus would do? It seems to me he would make sure that Tommy got completely healed at the best healing hospital! Am I wrong?

But that’s not all--people are getting hurt or sick all the time! Mr. Sanders, our neighbor next door has had a stroke and Mrs. Sanders had to start working as a cleaning lady and they are going to declare bank-rupture!

I know that people said that Jesus wasn’t supposed to heal on the Sabbath (Matt. 12:10; Mark 3:2; Luke 6:7; 13:14-17; 14:3) but can’t You do something—like tell the people in Congress to vote for the health plan Ted Kennedy wanted? Isn’t that the one Jesus wants too? So all the little children and their parents will have insurance and their medical bills will be covered and all the grandmas and grandpas will be covered too!

Lastly, dear God, why does Rush Limbaugh, Hannity and Sarah Palin hate so much and why do most Republicans hate so much? Why are they so mean? Why do they want Tommy to die? Why won’t they help him? And why do they say they are followers of Jesus when they act against him?

I am asking that you tell all the children in America to send a letter to the President and to the senators who served with Senator Kennedy before he died, and to the other Congress house people—asking them to pass universal health care coverage! Will you tell them too?

Yours Truly,
