A Blow to the Rule of Law
If you are in a "persistent vegetative state"
and there is a dispute about whether to keep
you alive, your case will probably go no
further than state court - unless you are
Terri Schiavo. President Bush signed
legislation yesterday giving Ms. Schiavo's
parents a personal right to sue in federal court

Unmasking the Theocons
by Sasha F. Chavkin
The intrusion of America's leading Republican politicians
into the tragic dilemma facing Terri Schiavo and her family
speaks volumes about how deeply they have become
beholden to the religious right. Brushing aside time-
honored advocacy for limited government and state
sovereignty at the behest of a crass internal memo
advertising a "great political issue" that "the pro-life
base will be excited" about, Congressional Republicans
and President Bush instead used the moment to pay
Christian conservatives their most dramatic homage to date.

GOP Talking Points on
Terri Schiavo
Memo, Obtained by ABC News,
Was Circulated Among Senate Republicans
The memo listing talking points on the Terri
Schiavo case was circulated among Republican

Hypocrisy of Bush, DeLay and
GOP Exposed!
Hospitals can end life support
Decision hinges on patient's ability to pay
A patient's inability to pay for medical care combined
with a prognosis that renders further care futile are two
reasons a hospital might suggest cutting off life support,
the chief medical officer at St. Luke's Episcopal
Hospital said Monday. Guess who signed the bill?
Yep. George W. Bush! All heart and caring!

The Schiavo Bill S. 686
The United States District Court for the Middle
District of Florida shall have jurisdiction to hear,
determine, and render judgment on a suit or claim
by or on behalf of Theresa Marie Schiavo for the
alleged violation of any right of Theresa Marie
Schiavo under the Constitution or laws of the
United States relating to the withholding or
withdrawal of food, fluids, or medical treatment
necessary to sustain her life.

Congress' action creates
legal tangle
Congress touched off a political firestorm with
its eleventh-hour effort to get Terri Schiavo's case
heard in federal court, but some legal experts say
the legislation raises even more pivotal questions
about limitations on congressional power.

Protect Yourself From the Schiavo Case Effect

Yurica Report's Editorial Note: A new survey by Findlaw.com finds that only 33% of Americans have a living will. Sixty-seven percent of Americans lack a living will, potentially leaving them with no say over whether they wish to receive life-sustaining medical treatment in the event they should become incapacitated or terminally ill. The national survey of 1,000 adults was conducted by telephone and results are accurate to within plus or minus three percent.
