One Way to 'Kill' a Story: Eagleburger Says Deep Throat Lucky He Wasn't Bumped Off
Published: June 04, 2005 11:30 AM ET
NEW YORK As what may forever be known as Deep Throat Week draws to a close, there are far too many highlights and lowlights to note, such as Peggy Noonan charging that the blood of millions is on the hands of Mark Felt and Woodward and Bernstein, because they brought down a "serious" president, which led to mass killings abroad, etc.
But here's another that has been widely overlooked. It occurred on Tuesday, just after the Vanity Fair article unmasked Felt and just before Woodward confirmed his identity as Deep Throat. In an appearance on "Crossfire," former secretary of state, and Nixon administration official, Lawrence Eagleburger was asked about Felt as Deep Throat. According to the CNN transcript, this exchange took place between co-host Joe Watkins and Eagleburger:
WATKINS: OK. Secretary Eagleburger, this is the million dollar question. I mean, folks have been waiting for three decades to know who Deep Throat was or is. Is Mark Felt, in your opinion, Deep Throat?
EAGLEBURGER: Probably.
WATKINS: Do you think he's Deep Throat?
EAGLEBURGER: Probably. You know, President Nixon once suspected him. I'm surprised he didn't end up dead somewhere because of that.
