A Short Review of the Preemptive Strike Doctrine
By Katherine Yurica
The idea of preemptive strikes is not new to mankind. Indeed they have occurred and they have been universally condemned as immoral. Because the President of the United States uses his Christian faith as a backdrop and photo opportunity (prayer at the cabinet meetings), it is fitting and proper to judge his performance against the sacred literature which he purportedly loves. Mr. Bush and Mr. Powell have made repeated assertions to the U.N. and to the citizens of the U.S. regarding Iraq prior to the invasion: 1) Iraq had and would use weapons of mass destruction against the U.S. 2) Iraqi intent was to attack the U.S. 3) Therefore, the U.S. would be morally and legally justified in attacking first.
In view of the fact that no weapons of mass destruction have been found, and indeed it seems implausible that any will be found to equal the large number of quantities which the Bush/Powell duo claimed proof of prior to their invasion, the entire orchestrated war effort now looks like a play in three acts, featuring Fear in the leading role. Keeping in mind the words of the Bush administration, here are the two most memorable incidents of Mr. Bushs reasoning from the Bible:
Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph. And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we. Come on, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when war occurs, they join also unto our enemies and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born [to the Israelites] ye shall cast into the river Exodus 1:1-22*
About fourteen centuries later, (if we take the stories at face value), wise men journeyed to Jerusalem and inquired of King Herod, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? When Herod, the king, had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where the Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for thus it is written by the prophet. Then Herod, when he had privately called the wise men, inquired of them diligently and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also . But the wise men were warned in a dream to go back another way. And an angel appeared to Mary and Joseph and told them to flee to Egypt. Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceedingly angry and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all its borders from two years old and under. (The slaughter of the babies is known as The Massacre of the Innocents.) Matthew 2:1-18.*
